School zone safety Is everyone's responsibility and our children's safety depends on it.
Every school experiences traffic problems associated with it's operation. These problems are not
only aggravating to drivers, but they create an unsafe environment for school children. It is important for drivers in or near school areas to be aware of traffic laws and constantly alert
to the presence of children. School traffic may be congested and confusing; drivers must
exercise more caution.
Following the DO'S of School Zone Traffic Safety
Do:
Be aware of established twenty (20) mile-per-hour school zones. These zones are effective school days only from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and from 2:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Plan ahead. Allow enough time to pick up children at a pre-designated location. Speeding and unsafe driving endanger everyone.
Park correctly. Double parking and parking in crosswalks are prohibited.
Leave school bus zones vacant and accessible. Watch for children in or near the street.
Watch for crossing guards and obey them when they stop traffic to allow children to cross the street safely.
Let children out of vehicles on the curb side only. Encourage to use established crosswalks.
Cellular Phone Use Prohibited in a School Zone
It is illegal to use a cell phone in a school zone unless the vehicle is stopped or a hands-free device is used. The safety and well-being of our children depends on the reasonable and prudent
driving habits of everyone in school zones. Please be careful to obey all traffic laws in these areas.
